The major income generating activities in the community forests
are: the collection and preparation of firewood and thatching
grass, wood carving and crafts production, indigenous fruits,
veldkost and medicinal plant gathering, boards and planks sawing
and basket weaving.
Medical plants for instance are gathered by traditional healers
and the knowledge is handed down from generation to generation.
Devils Claw is used to cure rheumatism and arthritis. Zambezi
Teak (Baikiaea plurijuga) is the main species for firewood. This
high quality braai wood is harvested in environmentally-friendly
manner, i.e, by utilizing only lying deadwood.
Communities are encouraged to add value to the forest products.
Improved harvesting and processing methods are trained to upgrade
local skills, to increase the quality of products and to sustain
the resources (e.g. the utilisation of deadwood). Locally adapted
techniques ensure sustainability of operations.
CFNEN is assisting in the marketing of forest products,
promoting more diversity in supplied products, and the provision
of attractive conditions for customers. The extended marketing
options on local and national markets provide job opportunities
and sources of income. Increased income caters for the well being
of the families, contributes to community development and strengthens
independence and social status.
With the support of CFNEN for instance a unique Community Craft
shop at Ncumcara in Kavango could open its doors in 2006, offering
a fine selection of high quality crafts produced by the local
people.
Firm business links to firewood and devils claw dealers have
been established providing a constant source of income even in
remote areas, where it is sometimes the first time for people
having an opportunity to earn cash money.
