CFNEN supports local people, individuals or groups in the Kavango
and Caprivi Regions, with low income who are interested in establishing
small scale orchards, vegetable gardens and nurseries. The project
aims to enhance the local food supply and to diversify and enrich
daily diets by vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables. Women are trained
in fruit processing like jam production in order to add value
and to conserve the products. The marketing of fruits and vegetables
provide additional income, skills and management capacities.
Depending on the individual sites and the commitment of garden owners,
the project will support garden areas up to 50x50 m as follows:
- Tools for working in the garden
- Technical advice, supervision and monitoring
- Training in managing orchards and vegetable gardens
- Training in bookkeeping
- Support for manual watering
- Improved varieties of exotic and indigenous fruit trees such
as Orange, Lemon, Mango, Guava, Paw-Paw
- Vegetable seeds for one year
- Training in local processing of vegetables and fruits
- Fencing materials
In return local people argee to:
- Provide confirmation of land use rights from traditional leaders
- Prepare the sites
- Provide poles for fencing
- Fence the area with provided materials
- Plant living fences surrounding the garden areas
- Plant, water and tend fruit trees, vegetables and living fences
